Medium to large, 3 – 15 ft. tall, deciduous, rhizomatous, shrub with a variable growth form. Distributed throughout much of the western and northern plains states from near sea level to 9,000 ft. Adapted to most textured soils. Weak tolerance to acid and alkali. Winter-hardy. Resprouts after fire. Fair to high palatability for both livestock and large wildlife species. Good tolerance to browsing. Produces fleshy fruits utilized by birds and small mammals. Very valuable shrub for wildlife habitat, range improvement, disturbed land restoration, and native landscaping. Minimum precip. is 12 – 14 inches. Plant in fall ¼ – ½   inch. deep. 45,000 seeds/lb.
