Perennial, short, 6 – 12 inches, evergreen, creeping, rhizomatous, sub-shrub. Grows on well-drained, moist to dry, medium textured soils from near sea level to 10,000 ft. elev. in precip. zones from 12 – 140 inches. Medium fire resistance. Toxic and unpalatable to livestock, but important food and cover for wildlife, both large and small species, birds and mammals. Valuable species for disturbed land revegetation on adapted sites. Also used as an ornamental being excellent for xeriscaping from heat and drought- resistance. Plant in fall ¼ – ½ inch deep. 45,000 seeds/lb.
