Perennial, deciduous, rhizomatous, thicket forming shrub, 3 – 6 ft. tall, occurring in all western states except AZ. Found on moderately dry to moist mountain zones on well-drained clay-loam, sandy-loam or sandy soils. Resprouts after fire. Blooms in early summer with large, solitary, pink/red flowers with red/purple fruits, which persist into winter. Valuable food and cover for wildlife. Plant in fall ½ inches deep. 45,000 seeds/lb.
