Perennial, 2 – 4 ft. tall, water-obligate, strongly-rhizomatous, wetland species often forming dense stands. Occurs throughout the entire western US on typical wetland sites from low to mid elevations. Good pioneering species that grows on most soil textures. Usually in standing water but will tolerate periods of drier conditions. Very acid, alkali, fire and somewhat salt-tolerant. Low palatability for livestock, very good food, cover and habitat for many species of wetland habitat wildlife. Plant spring or fall. ¼ – ½ inch deep. 170,000 seeds/lb.
