Perennial, 1 – 2 ft. tall, drought-deciduous, rhizomatous shrub common in the Sanoran and Mojave deserts from 1,000 – 3,500 ft. elevation. Has small divided leaves and sharp bur-like seeds. Grows on arroyos, bajadas, gentle slopes, valley floors and sand dunes on calcerous, sandy, alluvial soils. Very drought and heat-tolerant. Important browse species and habitat species to wildlife. Valuable desert shrub species for revegetation of adapted areas. Plant in fall ½ – 1 inch deep. 20,000 seeds/lb.
