Perennial, 2 – 4 ft. tall. Blooms in the early summer with showy, brightred tubular blossoms. Found native in most western states except in the north/north west areas. Found in all textured well-drained soils often in rocky or gravelly shallow, low fertility, soils on slopes. Low forage value for livestock but good for some species of wildlife including humming birds. Good insect pollinator species. Considered an extremely attractive wildflower and very desirable in wildflower plantings. Tolerates weak acid and alkali and grows well in the 8 – 20 inch precip. from 2,000 to 8,000 ft. elevation zone. Cold and drought tolerant. Short lived but will reseed itself from seed on adapted sites. Plant in fall ¼ – 1/8 inch deep. 325,000 seeds/lb.

Named Release: Richfield (Selected Class) Released in 1994 by the Aberdeen PMC. Origin was from near Richfield Utah. Intended uses are for erosion control, diversity and beautification.
