Rocky Mountain Penstemon (Native)

Perennial, 1 – 3 ft. tall. Blooms in early summer with blue-violet flowers. Adapted to much of the mountainous western US. Thrives on rocky, gravelly, sandy-loam soils, on foothills, mid-mountain slopes and in open wooded areas to sub alpine elevations. Weekly acid and alkali tolerant. Likes full-sun or partial-shade. Semi-evergreen, moderately palatable forage. Very valuable as an ornamental and for revegetation of disturbed sites. Also used in range and wildlife habitat improvement projects. Minimum precip. is 11-13 inches. Plant in fall 1/8 – ¼ inch deep. 285,000 seeds/lbs.

Named Release:Bandera’ (Cultivar) Released in 1973 by the Los Lunas, NM PMC. From a Torrance Co., NM source. Selected for erosion control, diversity, beautification and land restoration.
