Medium, 2 – 6 ft. tall, deciduous shrub found through much of the western US. Note: a number of sub-species are present within this species with various characteristics. Adapted to all soil textures, ranging in elev. from 2,000 – 9,000 ft. Generally fair acid, salt and alkali tolerant. Cold-tolerant. Vigorous and often an aggressive spreader. Usually fire-tolerant. Palatability varies with subspecies, season and animal type and ranges from poor to good. Used in wildlife habitat improvement projects. Valuable in soil stabilization and revegetation of disturbed sites because of its vigorous, aggressive spreading, deep rooted characteristics and ability to establish on severely harsh sites. Also used for native landscaping.  Minimum precip is 6 – 12 inches. (varies with subspecies). Plant fall or spring on top of rough surface to 1/8 inch deep. 450,000 – 750,000 seeds/lb.
