Perennial, 6 – 18 inches tall, highly variable circumboreal species. Short-lived, erect stature, rhizomatous, moderately drought-tolerant and aromatic. Small clusters of white flowers bloom late spring through late summer. Grows throughout most of North America from valley bottoms to sub-alpine. Does best in full sun, but has some shade tolerance. Best adapted to medium textures soils but grows on most soil types. Minimum precip. is 8 inches. Valuable ornamental in flower mixes and for revegetation and stabilization along roadsides, mine sites etc. Low palatability for most livestock but valuable for wildlife habitat including sage grouse. This species can be very invasive and aggressive so care should be used in planting it. Plant in fall or spring ¼ inch or less deep. 2,770,000 seeds/lb.
