Widespread, circumpolar species found in all of the western states. Perennial, prostrate, evergreen-shrub that produces extensive trailing stems. Most often a dominant under-story species in open pine forests but also on open slopes. Grows on a wide range of well-drained soil textures from low to high elevations depending on climate and latitudes. Moderate moisture requirements and fire-tolerant. Good forage and habitat for a number of species of wildlife, including bears, which love their fruits. Plant in fall ½ inch deep. 39,000 seeds/lb.
