Short, ½ – 1 ft. tall, prostrate shrub very widespread in Wyoming and Montana but also found in surrounding states from 3,500 – 7,500 ft. elevation. Most common on fine textured clay badlands but also grows on fine to medium textured dry slopes, ridges and flats. Very salt and alkali-tolerant. Cold-tolerant. Good palatability to both wildlife and livestock year-round. Very important native shrub for mining and related soil disturbing activities reclamation. Also used for range and wildlife habitat improvement and restoration. Minimum precip. is 6 – 8 inches. Plant in fall ½ inch deep. 111,000 seeds/lb.
