Mountain Brome (Native)
Medium to tall, 1½ – 3 ft, short-lived, cool-season, vigorous bunchgrass. Does best on moderately deep, fertile, moist, medium to fine texture soils but will survive in less optimum conditions. Fair salt tolerance, good winter-hardiness and shade-tolerant. Good abundant, palatable, forage producer. Good for range, pasture and wildlife habitat improvement where moisture is adequate. Also used for erosion control. Minimum precip. is 16 inches. Plant in fall ¼ – ½ inch deep. 90,000 seeds/lb.
Named Releases: ‘Bromar’ (Cultivar) Released in 1946 by WA, ID, OR AES. Selected for being taller, leafier, better seedling vigor than others. Origin was chosen from 154 accessions collected in the Pacific Northwest.
‘Garnet’ Germplasm (Tested) Released in 2001 by the PMC in Meeker, CO. Selected from an ecotype near the town of Garnet, MT. Garnet has improved seedling vigor, longer plant duration, extended seed production and better resistance to smut as compared to Bromar.
