Prairie Sandreed (Native)
Tall, 3 – 5 ft., perennial, rhizomatous, sod-forming, drought-tolerant, warm-season grass. Best adapted to sandy soils but does fair on loamy textures. Fair palatability and tolerant to grazing. Very useful in stabilizing and revegetation of sandy soils. Also used for range, pastures and hay-land improvement. Minimum precip. is 10 – 12 inches. Plant in spring ½ – 1 inch deep. 274,000 seeds/lb.
Named Releases: ‘Goshen’ (Cultivar) Released in 1976 by the Bridger, MT PMC and MT and WY AES. Original germplasm was collected from near Torrington, WY.
‘Pronghorn’ (Cultivar) Released by the U of NE ARS and the Manhattan, KS PMC in 1988. Forty eight accessions were evaluated and selected for vigor.
‘Bowman’ (Cultivar) Released by the Bismarck, ND PMC from germplasm collected in southern and western ND. It has a dense wiry root mass well adapted for stabilizing sandy soils.
