Perennial, robust forb with deep woody roots and numerous stems 2 – 6 ft. tall. Blooms in the summer with a long racme of attractive, rich, purple-blue flowers. Common tall forb species found in much of the Intermountain Region from 5,000 – 10,000 ft. often growing in dense stands on fairly moist sites. Prefers moist, rich, deep-loamy soils but will grow in drier, shallow clay soils and sandy soils. Palatable to wildlife and livestock but poisonous especially to cattle. Valuable species for wildflower plantings, land restoration and as a pollinator species. Plant spring or fall ¼ inch or less deep. 550,000 seeds/lb.
