Medium height, 1 – 2 ft., short-lived, cool-season, densely-tufted bunchgrass.  Does best in deep, moist, poorly drained or well-drained, medium to fine textured soils.  Good tolerance to acid, alkali and salt.  Grows well at high elevations. Excellent  palatable forage for livestock and wildlife.  Useful for range, pasture and wildlife habitat improvement.  Also for revegetation of moist, high elevation, disturbed sites.  Minimum precip. is 16 – 18 inches.  Plant in the fall ¼ – ½ inch deep. 2,500,000 seeds/lb.

Named Releases: Nortran’ (Cultivar) Released in 1986 by the AFES in Fairbanks, Alaska from germplasm collected in Alaska and Iceland. Long-lived, tolerates acidic, cold, wet, low fertility soils and many rusts and snow molds. Performs well on adapted sites.
