(old nomenclature: Cowania mexicana stansburiana) (Native)
Medium to large, 3 – 20 ft. evergreen shrub, or small tree found in CA, NV, UT, CO, AZ and NM usually on shallow dry soils on rocky slopes, foothills and mesas from 4,000 – 8,000 ft. elevation. Long-lived, drought- tolerant adapted to all soil textures but does best on medium to fine textures. Fair salt-tolerance. Palatable, nutritious forage for livestock and wildlife especially on winter ranges. Also, very good food and cover for many species of wildlife. Establishes and thrives on very harsh sites. Valuable browse species for range and wildlife habitat improvement projects. Used also in native landscaping and disturbed site revegetation. Minimum precip. is 7 – 10 inches. Plant in fall ¼ – ½ inch deep. 65,000 seeds/lb.
