Medium, 3 – 8 ft. tall, deciduous, root-spreading shrub distributed throughout much of the western half of the US from 3,500 – 8,000 ft. elevation. Adapted to most soil textures. Common on dry, shallow soil on rocky foothills and valley bottoms but also found on more favorable sites. Intolerant to flooding and high water tables. Generally poor forage for livestock and fair to good for wildlife. Important food and cover for birds and small mammals. Used for disturbed land restoration, wildlife habitat, windbreaks and native landscaping. Minimum precip is 10-12 inches. Plant in fall ¼ – ½ inch deep. 20,000 seeds/lb.
