Perennial, deciduous shrub, 1 – 3 ft. tall, with short spines on the stems. Occurs in all western states usually at sub-alpine to alpine sites on drier slopes and ridges and along streams and in more moist forest environments. Grows on medium to coarse textured soils. Considered poor forage for livestock but good forage and cover for many species of wildlife. Plant in fall ¼ inch deep. 200,000 seeds/lb.
