Medium, 3 – 8 ft. tall, deciduous, spinescent shrub distributed throughout the western US from 2,500 ft. – 7,500 ft. elevation. Common on clay, saline or alkaline lowland and also on dry, medium texture, valley bottoms, slopes and ridges. Cold-tolerant. Fair to good palatability to both livestock and wildlife but may have high oxalate content. Very useful for reclamation of harsh saline/alkali sites and for native landscaping. Minimum precip is 6 – 9 inches. Plant in fall ¼ – ½ inch deep. 285,000 seeds/lb.
