Large, 8 – 18 ft. tall, thorny, deciduous, thicket-forming shrub found scattered throughout much of the west (not in the Pacific Northwest area) from 3,500 – 7,500 ft. elevation. Adapted to all soil textures but most common on well-drained medium to coarse texture, moist or semi-wet bottomlands, hillsides and stream sides. Plants spread by underground stems. Slight acid and moderate alkali and salt-tolerance. Weak drought-tolerance. Winter-hardy. Poor palatability to cattle, fair to sheep and deer. Good food and cover for birds and small mammals. Used for reclamation, windbreaks, wildlife habitat, barriers and native landscaping. Minimum precip. is 12 – 14 inches. Plant in fall ¼ – ½ inch deep. 43,000 seeds/lb.
