Perennial, herbaceous, somewhat grass-like, rhizomatous, extensive clonal, wetland species from 3 – 8 ft. tall. Found across the entire US and has a broad tolerance to various climatic conditions. Grows from sea level to 7,500 ft. elev. Tolerates many soils textures, nutrient levels, PH levels, depths of water, seasonal drought and flooding. Not generally palatable to livestock but important food and shelter to many species of wildlife though not especially so for waterfowl such as ducks. Resprouts from fire and can be invasive and aggressive in some situations. Sometimes important species for restoration of wetlands. Plant in fall near surface. 100,700,000 seeds/lb.
