Perennial forb, 10 – 24 inches tall with an attractive, bright, purple-blue racme of flowers that bloom in the summer. Common species throughout most of the western states occurring in elevations from 1,000 – 10,000 ft. Usually found on drier open sites in a number of different habitat types. Grows best on medium texture well-drained soil but will grow on other soil types. Low to moderate water requirements. Palatable to wildlife and livestock but poisonous especially to cattle. Valuable species for wildflower plantings, land restoration and as a pollinator species. Plant spring or fall ¼ inch or less deep. 650,000 seeds/lb.
