Medium height, 2 – 4 ft., long-lived, rhizomatous, nitrogen-fixing, spreading legume. Adapted to most soil textures but does best on fertile, well-drained calcareous soil. Fair tolerance to alkali and acid soils. Winter-hardy. Good, palatable, semi-evergreen forage producer. Used for hay, pasture, rangeland and wildlife habitat improvement. Valuable for watershed protection of poor, erosive, and steep sloping sites along roads, strip mines, etc. Inoculate seed. Minimum precip. is 20 inches. Plant in fall ¼ – ½ inch deep. 110,000 seeds/lb.
Named Releases: ‘Chemung’ and ‘Emerald’- 1960’s releases from USSR ecotypes. Developed for a ground cover for disturbed land soil stabilization.
