Medium to large, 3 – 10 ft. tall deciduous shrub or small tree distributed throughout the entire western US, except for the northern third, generally at elevations between 4,000 – 10,000 ft. Most common on well-drained, medium-fine to medium- coarse textured soils. Often on rocky, gravelly and thin soils on dry slopes and ridges but also on moister, deeper soils of depressions and canyon bottoms. Moderately tolerant to acid and alkali soils. Very palatable and nutritious forage for all browsing animals, livestock and wildlife all year long. Good tolerance to grazing. Important browse species for range and wildlife habitat improvement. Also used for mining reclamation and native landscaping. Minimum precip. is 9 – 12 inches. Plant in fall ¼ – ½ inch deep. 59,000 seeds/lb.
