Leymus racemosus, Mammoth Wildrye
(old nomenclature: Elymus giganteus) (Introduced)
Perennial, 3 – 4 ft. tall, cool-season, drought-tolerant, rhizomatous grass. Adapted to inland sand dunes, deep sands, and dredge soils. Useful to stop sand movement and provide cover for wildlife. Unpalatable, winter-hardy, and somewhat alkaline-tolerant. Minimum precip. is 7 inches. Plant fall or spring ¾ – 1 inch deep. 80,000 seed/lb.
Named Release: ‘Volga’ (Cultivar) Released from 1934 seed collections from the former Soviet Union. Developed for control of inland sand dunes in the Pacific Northwest but used in other adapted areas of the west.
