Medium, 2½ – 5 ft. tall, long-lived, evergreen shrub distributed throughout much of the mountainous western US, from 3,000 – 9,800 ft. elevation. Adapted to well-drained, medium depth, coarse to medium soil textures on upper mountain slopes, mountain parks, and higher benches. Tolerates slightly acidic and alkaline soils. Usually rated as poor to fair forage for livestock and good nutritious for wildlife. Excellent cover for wildlife and food for sage grouse and many other wildlife species. Palatability varies. Very valuable shrub used for range and wildlife habitat improvement, disturbed site restoration and for native landscaping. Minimum precip. is 12 – 14 inches. Plant in fall on top of rough surface to ¼ inch deep or on top of snow in early winter. 1,750,000 seeds/lb.
