Perennial, 2½ – 5 ft. tall, warm-season grass with short rhizomes. A major component of the tall grass prairies of central and eastern US. Grows best on deep, well-drained flood plain soils, but tolerant of poorly drained acid to alkaline conditions and textures ranging from clay to sand. Palatable and nutritious forage for wildlife and livestock. Used for adapted site habitat restoration and soil stabilization. Plant in late spring ½ – ¾ inch deep. 175,000 seeds/lb.
Named Releases: ‘Holt’ (Cultivar) Released in 1960 as an ecotype from Holt, Co. NE for revegetation on adapted sites in NE and surrounding states.
‘Cheyenne’ (Cultivar) Released in 1945 as an ecotype from Supply, OK for use in OK and TX.
‘Tomahawk’ (Cultivar) Released in 1988 as an ecotype from ND and SD and exhibits early maturity and better winter hardiness and persistence.
